Tips for Moving Out

Now that the semester is coming to an end, there comes that dreaded time to move out. You may have accumulated more things than when you started the year, so here are some tips to make sure your moving out process is as smooth as possible.

Packed moving boxes stacked in an empty apartment

  • Start thinking now about what you realistically can take home with your or what you want to move to your next apartment. Some quick options include donating items, selling on online shops, giving some to friends or wait for MoveOutATX which typically takes place at the end of July. The more time you give yourself, the less overwhelming it will be.
  • If possible, find somewhere to store your furniture, excess materials and things that do not fit in your car. If you’re leaving stuff behind in a storage unit, make sure that you have reserved the space as well as reading all the paperwork to avoid violations of their rules.
  • Pack all the essentials required for a great summer. This can include your clothing, hygiene items, medicine and important documents.
  • Make sure to clean your living space as best as possible to prevent losing any money from the security deposit made when you signed your lease.
  • If there’s any damage to the apartment, submit work orders to fix them prior to moving out to help prevent losing deposit money. Depending on the severity of the damage, it may cost nothing at all aside from a quick call to the repair center of your apartment.
  • During the final stages of your move out, check the move out deadline the landlord or property manager set for move out. Make sure to turn in keys, access cards and other items checked out from the apartment to avoid charges.
  • Don’t stress out too much about the process. Everyone is going through the same thing around you or will go through it in the future. If you take these words of advice, you can be ahead of the game. Have a great summer!
