Frequently Asked Questions

Why was the off-campus initiative created?

In response to student inquiries about needing more resources for living off campus, Dr. Soncia- Reagins Lilly, Vice President of Student Affairs and Dean of Students, charged New Student Services and director, Dr. Celena Mondie-Milner to start an initiative to centralize various off-campus information for students. Paige Muehlenkamp was hired as the Off Campus and Outreach Coordinator in September 2018. She was tasked with cultivating resources including a website to assist students with resources for living off campus. The website, offcampus.utexas.edu, launched in March 2019, and more resources will be added to it in the future.

What is the mission of the off-campus initiative?

This new initiative is a part of New Student Services, and is designed to assist UT Austin students by providing tools and resources for off-campus living.

Is there a committee that supports this initiative?

The Off-Campus Outreach committee, led by New Student Services, has representatives from Student Activities, University Housing and Dining, Texas Parents, Sorority and Fraternity Life, and the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement. The committee meets once a month. We are currently searching for a student representative to serve on the committee. Please email paige.muehlenkamp@austin.utexas.edu if you live off campus and are interested in serving on the committee.

Were there/are there any students involved with this initiative?

Yes, student feedback was collected via social media channels and small focus group discussions to determine common resources that students indicated as most helpful (parking and transporation information, on-campus resources, etc.)

What are the future plans for the off-campus initiative?

The off-campus website launched in March 2019, and we plan to continually add to it with additional resources. We look forward to introducing future programming and activities for off-campus students to help them acclimate to the Austin community. With additional personnel added in 2019, our goal is to widen the scope of programming and communications support for students who reside off campus.

Is this an exhaustive list of off campus resources?

The resources on the off-campus website are compiled with the needs of off-campus students in mind. To see an exhaustive list of on-campus resources, visit the Current Student Resources page on the main university site.

Will there be assistance with finding an off-campus apartment on the website?

We are currently researching the need and possibility of adding an apartment finder guide on the website which will allow visitors to compare apartments.

Is there an opportunity to provide feedback or make future requests?

Yes, located on the About tab of the website, students are welcome to provide feedback about what resources they would like to share and/or learn more about in the future.

Where can I find a roommate?

Our office does not endorse or coordinate roommate finding services. However, students may be able to make connections with fellow students in their official class Facebook groups.
